03.02.16 4 proposals have been selected to proceed in the Nordic Built Cities Challenge Runavík

A jury has selected the 4 proposals, which will compete in the final in the Nordic Built Cities Challenge in Runavík.

In the summer of 2015 The Municipality of Runavík was selected to represent the Faroe Islands in the Nordic Built Cities Challenge. The problem which the competitors were asked to solve on behalf of The Municiplaity of Runavík, was the common challenge of building in the Faroe Islands - building in steep terrain - in the area between Blikagøta and Hjallavegur in Saltangará.

20 proposals were submitted late last year from the Faroe Islands, the Nordic Countries and Europe, and a local jury has deliberated and then chosen 4 proposals. The firms behind the four selected proposals will develop their ideas further, and after further deliberation this summer, a final winner will be chosen.

The four selected proposals are: “Strip Horizon” by Cuartoymitad Architecture & Landscape from Spain/Britain, “Built Enclosure - Natural Connection” by Mass Lab from Portugal, “Hygge” by Hyde Architects from Wales and "The Eyes of Runavík” by White Architects from Danmark.

All the 20 very interesting proposals will be on display in the library Bókasavnið við Løkin in Runavík from Wednesday 3rd February. They can also be seen on the competition website www.nbccrunavik.com

The Nordic Built Cities Challenge comprises six local competitions in the Nordic countries. It is a part of the Nordic Built Cities programme, which has as its ambition to develop, showcase and export Nordic innovative solutions for liveable, smart and sustainable cities.

Nordic Built Cities is a lighthouse programme in the Nordic Co-operation Programme for Innovation and Business Policies 2014-2017. Denmark is lead country for the programme and responsible for its implementation in cooperation with the other national governments and the Nordic Council of Ministers. Nordic Innovation is responsible for the design and management of the Nordic Built Cities programme – including the Nordic Built Cities Challenge.

NOVEMBER 2015 Take part in the Nordic Built Cities Challenge

Architects, companies and creative people in general are invited to take part in a Nordic competition about urban areas. Nordic Innovation is seeking ideas for solving some challenges in the Faroe Islands and in the other Nordic Countries.

Earlier this year the Municipality of Runavík won the right to represent the Faroe Islands in the Nordic Competition, which is run by Nordic Innovation, a Nordic institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The purpose of the challenge is to find new innovative solutions to challenges facing urban areas in the Nordic Countries and hereby to get sustainable cities with the high level of living and satisfaction commonly found in the Nordic Countries.

37 challenges were submitted from local authorities in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, and the Municipality of Runavík was chosen to represent the Faroe Islands.

A Competition Programme has been made. The challenge that the Municipality of Runavík wants solved is: "The vertical challenge – how to build innovative and sustainable family homes on a steep terrain." The area in question is the area between Hjallavegur and Blikagøta in Saltangará.

This challenge is now, together with 5 other Nordic challenges, placed in a public competition, which is open to everyone. Up to four finalists per country will be chosen from the sumitted proposals, and the prize is NOK 300.000. One winner will be appointed per Nordic country.
